Strategic planning is often the most neglected of processes even in the largest of organizations.  In our decades of work conducting strategic planning and implementing strategic planning processes we have seen it all.  Strategic planning is typically not understood even at the executive level and rarely translates to directed action within the operation.  World class organizations understand this problem and have mastered the techniques for strategic planning that keep them ahead of the competition.  The good news is that it does not have to be complicated.  It requires open mindedness and the ability to focus once direction is chosen. MSI has provided strategic planning solutions for major businesses, government, and defense organizations.  Our methods are proven and the results are lasting.

Strategic Planning Rules of Thumb:

1.      Focus on the action plan, not the strategic plan

2.      Quantify the voice of the customer, be objective, understand the difference between perspective and reality

3.      Leadership and strategy are dependent upon each other and leadership must be fully committed to strategy

4.      The strategy will never be perfect, so plan enough to get on the right path, then begin to execute

5.      Employ a strategic management process that continually improves the less than perfect strategy

6.      Ensure commitment to strategic goals, objectives, and means through a catch-ball process

7.      Accurately estimate and account for resource needs when setting strategy and launching means

8.      Understand and clearly delineate between strategies and goals

9.      Maintain a balance of both performance and maturity related goals

10.  Incorporate a simple standardized methodology such as Plan Do Check Act for conducting the means and initiatives

11.  Require organizational business case, investment analysis, and budgeting processes to integrate with strategic management processes

12.  Employ a common set of templates and tools for managing and reporting on the means and initiatives

13.  Know the culture of your organization and deploy strategy appropriately, Change Management

14.  Communicate early and often to everyone in the organization

Our competitors will push complex 12 step programs for strategic planning with complicated three dimensional models that look impressive in the board room, but do not translate into actionable process.  MSI's approach is simple and effective.  It is a three phase approach comprised of only nine major steps.  It focuses on action aligned to strategic goals and it is proven to work.  Our Executive Consultants have conducted strategic planning in nearly every type of organization and business.

Enabled by the MSI Strategic Planning and Goal Deployment Toolkit, MSI's Executive Consultants are ready to help you set a course for success and to implement a strategic planning process that keeps you on course in the future.
